A lot is going on over at ABC Daytime. Major shakeups are happening at GMA3. Could it be time to end the news program and bring back soaps?
GMA3 began in 2020 during the pandemic to give the audience the latest updates on COVID-19, and was anchored by Amy Robach with featured medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton. T.J. Holmes was later added as co-host.
A slight scandal broke out in late 2022 when it was revealed that Robach and Holmes were having an extramarital affair. It was later announced that the two would depart the show and the network. Rhiannon Ally, DeMarco Morgan, Eva Pilgrim, and Gio Benitez became fill-in hosts. In May 2023, Pilgrim and Morgan became the permanent successors.

Viewers of the sho w have noticed recent changes in the program, with some GMA hosts filling in and a more similar feel to the morning version. Pilgrim was soon named as the new host of Inside Edition, and Morgan’s exit was announced. So what now?
Bring On The Soaps
ABC has floundered to find afternoon programming since the cancellation of All My Children in 2011 and One Life to Live in 2012. The Tamron Hall Show is a hit for the network, but their news show continues to struggle.
It may be time to bring back a soap, and the fans are calling for it. Most would love to see a resurrection of AMC or OLTL. Who wouldn’t love to see Erica Kane back on our screens? Or the Buchanans? To finally see Roger Howarth back as Todd Manning would be a treat. One fan even mentioned a return of the long-gone The Edge of Night. What a blast from the past!

Soap fans are extremely loyal. They love the oldies, but a brand new daytime drama is always an option, ala Beyond The Gates on CBS. A new series could bring in soap junkies and possibly younger viewers. Do you think it’s time for ABC to lose GMA3 and bring back more love in the afternoon? What would you like to see?
