BBC Casualty star opens up on ‘betrayal’ as character falls under suspicion of theft

Casualty star Charles Venn, who plays paramedic Jacob Masters in the long-running BBC medical drama, has opened up on how his character is feeling as he falls under suspicion of stealing badly needed morphine from the hospital. Although he is a long-serving and loyal member of staff, nurse Faith Dean (Kirsty Mitchell) found herself suspecting him as she delved into what was going on with the morphine supply. As she investigated the issue, she came to believe Jacob, who is not only a colleague of her husband, Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson), but also his good friend, was responsible.

Robert Webb discusses whether he would return to Strictly

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk and other media on a recent visit to the set, he pondered the betrayal and how it will affect Jacob’s relationship wth Iain. “It’s a crazy one, isn’t it, but it’s one of those tricky ones sometimes, when your other half is telling you, ‘You’re gonna have to have a word, because if you don’t have it, I’m gonna have that word’. So it’s an awkward one. I’ve been in similar situations like that, and you do feel pressured,” he said.

While Iain is loath to believe Faith’s suspicions, Charles admits her mistrust, and his subsequent actions will have a ripple effect on his relationship with his friend.

“Obviously, you remain professional, no matter what, first and foremost. But definitely, they’re such close mates – Jacob was his best man – you want to believe that they’ll figure it out eventually.

“You just hope eventually you get around to it. At some point, it’s just a case of not if, but when (you make up),” he said.

Charles was speaking as he got set to celebrate a decade working on the award-winning show, and he confessed he still loves being part of it.

“An actor’s life is always nomadic – you go where the gig is. If anyone told me that I was going to do ten years on Casualty, I would have said: ‘I’ll take that.’

“It’s 100% an honour (to work here) because you’re talking about a show that’s very much an institution. It’s synonymous with the BBC and is one of their flagship shows.

“Long may that continue, as far as I’m concerned (because) to be associated with this wonderfully successful show, number one medical drama, it’s a beautiful feeling,” he said.
