It has been revealed that BBC Studios has won the contract to produce Casualty, after a competitive tender process.

Since 2012, BBC Cymru Wales has produced episodes of Casualty, having taken over from BBC Bristol.

The new contract has created an opportunity to increase Welsh portrayal and the show will be set in Cardiff as well as continuing to be filmed there.

This transition ensures Casualty plays an important role in the production ecology of Wales as part of the BBC’s commitment to backing homegrown storytelling.

The contract is for three series with filming due to start in Spring 2026.

The Sun previously revealed how crew working on Casualty had been told there’s just two more series left.

Due to “super-inflation in drama production” and a string of cost-cutting measures, staff said they have been told their contract renewals will be the last.

In September, The Sun told how bosses had slashed the number of episodes due to pressures amid the cost of living crisis.

Casualty was then put out to tender in May 2025 as the BBC opened it to competition and fans were worried it would be axed like Holby City.

However, the BBC Studios bid scored highest against the published criteria and fans can now breathe more easily.

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, says: “Casualty is a hugely important, much loved BBC drama and this tender has ensured it will continue to flourish.

“It was an extremely competitive process and we would like to thank the shortlisted producers for their high quality and comprehensive proposals.

“We look forward to working with BBC Studios as we build on the show’s long-running success.”

Nick Andrews, Head of Commissioning, BBC Cymru Wales, says: “Casualty will be supercharging the portrayal of Wales to the UK and beyond and BBC Cymru Wales are delighted.

“Casualty always breaks new ground, and it has done so again. The sheer scale of the portrayal of Wales – in character and place is a game changer.

“BBC Studios fired our imaginations, and we look forward to where they take the world of Casualty next.”
