Home and Away star Matt Evans has opened up about life after leaving the long-running soap.

Speaking to Daily Mail, the 29-year-old revealed he is deep in auditions, enjoying a rare break from the hectic filming schedule and preparing for a major new chapter in his career.

The actor and musician quietly exited the series earlier this year, and says stepping away from the Bay has given him the clarity and space he never had while filming full-time.

‘I’ve been auditioning for lots of different things and trusting that the right project will come along,’ Matt explained.

‘After four years of being on Home and Away and living that busy schedule life, it’s been nice to have a bit of a break and assess my options.’

Matt also confirmed he’s entered a new phase in his personal life after finding love on set before his departure.

‘I found a beautiful girlfriend [Sophea Pennington] on the show, so that’s been really nice,’ he said. ‘We’ve started that chapter of having a partner, and it’s cool because I can support her while she’s still going through the show.’

Although many fans originally discovered Matt through his time on The Voice, he revealed music has temporarily taken a back seat as he leans into acting.

He hasn’t abandoned it completely though, and hopes to combine both passions in an upcoming project.

‘Music is always there, but I’ve been focusing more on the acting,’ he said.

‘It’s a dream of mine to play a biopic of a famous musician or do something like a Disney musical. I love the idea of blending the two. Maybe even musical theatre one day. There’s potential.’

While Matt wouldn’t reveal details of his next move, he hinted something is already brewing.

‘There’ll be something on the horizon. When there is, I’ll let people know. For the time being, I’m working hard.’

He’s also taking the rare opportunity to return home to Perth for Christmas, something that hasn’t been possible every year due to filming commitments.

He said he grew up with big family gatherings, incredible food and a mum who ‘loves presents’, and this year the entire family will reunite. ‘I’ve been looking forward to it all year,’ he admitted.

And while his career direction shifts, Matt has been channelling his energy into a cause that struck a personal chord – the Light the World Giving Machines, which allow shoppers to donate essential items at the tap of a button.

He said one donation option in particular stopped him in his tracks.

‘I donated a little teddy today because I was thinking about how much difference it can make. As a kid, everyone has that one toy that means the world to them. For a child who can’t afford one, that teddy could become their new best friend.’

Matt said being involved in the charity felt especially meaningful at this stage of his life.

‘I’ve been very lucky to always have family around and gifts at Christmas. I know that’s not the case for everyone. So being able to help give that feeling to someone else means a lot.’
