It looks as though there’s good news for fans of Casualty as the BBC have recently shared an update on its future

Good news is on the horizon for Casualty fans, as the BBC has officially confirmed fresh details about the long-running medical drama’s future.

Since its debut in 1986, Casualty has followed the intense personal and professional lives of doctors, nurses, and patients at the Accident & Emergency department of the fictional Holby City Hospital. Nearly four decades on, the series remains one of the BBC’s most enduring and beloved dramas.

Earlier this year, the show’s 39th season concluded with a powerful finale, followed by a short miniseries titled Supply and Demand, which served as a bridge and introduced the opening episodes of season 40. The dramatic ending left viewers on edge—particularly after a devastating twist put Ngozi Okoye’s future in serious doubt just as she was preparing to leave with her son, Obi.

In May 2025, Casualty was officially put out to tender, and BBC Studios emerged successful in securing the contract. The new agreement covers three full series, with filming scheduled to begin in spring 2026. The BBC also confirmed that the show will remain set in Cardiff and continue to be filmed there, reinforcing its strong connection to Wales.Zoe and Max are outside they ED. Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, described Casualty as a vital part of the BBC’s drama slate, praising the competitive tender process and expressing confidence that BBC Studios will build on the show’s long-standing success. Nick Andrews, Head of Commissioning at BBC Cymru Wales, echoed that sentiment, highlighting the series’ growing role in showcasing Wales to audiences across the UK and beyond. He described the scale and authenticity of its portrayal as a “game changer” for the drama.

Viewers won’t have to wait long for the next chapter, as the BBC has confirmed that Casualty will return to screens on January 10.

The announcement sparked an enthusiastic response from fans online. Many expressed relief and excitement at the show’s comeback, with some eager to learn what lies ahead for Ngozi Okoye following her shocking relapse storyline. Others simply welcomed the return of a familiar Saturday night staple, admitting that evenings haven’t felt the same without it.

With new episodes on the way and long-term plans secured, Casualty looks set to continue delivering gripping, emotionally charged storytelling well into the future.
