As Yellowstone nears the end of its epic journey, one character’s conclusion stands out as particularly resonant — Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, had one of the series’ most cathartic send-offs. For Grimes, it wasn’t just the end of a storyline, it was the closure of a deeply personal chapter. “On the last day of shooting, I thought it was my last day as Kayce,” he shared in an interview with People. “It was over to me. It was seven years of playing a person that I’ll never see again, except for having his hat and jacket in my closet.”
That sense of finality lingered with the actor for months after filming wrapped. But then, the unexpected happened — new opportunities began to surface. “It wasn’t until probably three or four months after that that everything started aligning for the spinoff,” Grimes revealed.
That spinoff is Y: Marshals, one of the newest additions to Taylor Sheridan’s expanding Yellowstone universe. In May 2025, Grimes confirmed he would be returning as Kayce Dutton in the new series, a surprise to fans who assumed the former Navy SEAL-turned-livestock agent had finally found peace and closure. “Kayce rode off into the sunset,” Grimes acknowledged. “But there’s a whole new world waiting for him over the horizon.”
The Yellowstone franchise continues to grow rapidly, with 1944 and Dutton Ranch also in development, joining the ranks of acclaimed prequels and spinoffs like 1883, 1923, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves. But Y: Marshals marks a unique departure — rather than a prequel, it’s a continuation that seeks to evolve the story of one of the series’ most compelling characters.
Initially, Grimes wasn’t sure he was ready to return. “I was conflicted at first,” he admitted. “I really felt like Kayce got what he’s been looking for at the end of Yellowstone — a sense of peace, family, purpose. And I didn’t want to undo that just to keep going.”

However, the pitch for Y: Marshals changed everything. “If it was just like, ‘Well, he’s happy now’ — we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool,” he said, with a laugh. “But I’ll say this — the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good. It’s complex, it’s interesting, and it really roped me in. I think it will rope the audience in as well.”
Details about the spinoff remain tightly under wraps, but Grimes will lead a brand-new ensemble in Y: Marshals. While fans are eager to know if Kelsey Asbille and Brecken Merrill will reprise their roles as Monica and Tate Dutton, Grimes remained coy: “There’s going to be some familiar faces, but there’s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we’ll see how that all feels.”
He acknowledged that the transition might feel strange, not only for viewers but for himself as well. “It will be weird — Kayce’s world has always revolved around his family and the ranch. Stepping into something new, without that exact setup, is definitely a shift. But that’s what makes it exciting.”
More importantly, Grimes emphasized that the spinoff isn’t just a way to keep the franchise alive — it’s an intentional continuation with heart and narrative weight. “We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable. If we’re doing this, we’re doing it right.”
Whether Y: Marshals explores Kayce’s role in federal law enforcement, expands on his past, or pushes him into new moral dilemmas, fans can rest assured that the man who played him for nearly a decade is fully invested. “I’ve lived with this character for so long. Coming back to him feels both familiar and new. It’s a challenge I’m really looking forward to.”

As the Yellowstone universe continues to evolve, Kayce Dutton’s journey is far from over. If Y: Marshals lives up to the promise of its premise, it may just be the next great chapter in an already legendary saga.
