Poor Rash Masum. He just can’t seem to catch a break in Casualty, can he?

Things were beginning to look up for the beloved character, as he’s spent this boxset getting to know Sunny Callahan (Jamie Marie Leary) from the pharmacy. It’s been a little awkward in some places, but Rash and Sunny have been getting along really well.

Last week though, we discovered Rash’s new love interest is the person behind the drug thefts, which has been a strong focus throughout this miniseries. In this week’s episode, he will discover Sunny’s betrayal, and kind-hearted Rash wastes no time in taking action.

Unsurprisingly, keeping Sunny’s secret isn’t something Rash is going to do, meaning his role as boyfriend is going to last all of five minutes.

Elsewhere, trouble continues for Flynn Byron (Olly Rix). He’s been behaving out of character recently, and it becomes apparent on Saturday that Cassie’s case is impacting him more than he’s willing to admit.

Rash makes a devastating discovery

Rash in the ED looking worried in Casualty
The break-up era looms for our Rash (Picture: BBC)

Sunny is anxious when Jan’s (Di Botcher) suspicions about the tampered morphine are made clear. When Rash realises Sunny is hiding something from him, he tries to get her to open up, but is hurt when she fails to do so.

Once Jan flags her suspicions about the pharmacy’s involvement in the morphine mystery, Rash is quick to defend Sunny, adamant she wouldn’t ever do something like that.

But after Sunny makes a medical mistake with a scorpion victim, she feels like she has no choice but to tell Rash that she has been stealing the morphine.

She pleads with Rash not to report her, explaining that she’s been doing this to protect her son Jake, who was groomed by the gang. When Rash discovers delivery driver Terry has been brought into the ED after being attacked by the gang, he then learns that Sunny told the gang about Terry’s drop-off.

Her crime is too big for Rash to keep secret and reports Sunny to the police. When they arrive, Rash is left heartbroken and guilt-ridden.

Flynn’s focus is elsewhere

Usually strong-willed Flynn starts his shift feeling out of sorts. He advises Nicole Piper (Sammy T Dobson) not to get her hopes up when there’s a small sign of hope about Cassie. In the ED, Flynn is detached, but ends up getting involved in a guest patient he fears is being abused. After helping the woman to escape, Flynn then learns he was taken for a ride.

Later, Cassie’s birth mum Vicky arrives. She speaks about not being able to lose Cassie a second time and the words, for some reason, resonate with Flynn.

In ITU, Flynn promises Nicole that he’ll sit with Cassie while she goes to Newcastle. He then quietly settles into the chair beside her bed. What is going on with him?

Iain and Faith try to talk it out

You can sense the awkwardness already (Picture: BBC)

Iain and Faith head to counselling, their relationship on the rocks. At the session though, Iain feels triggered when Faith’s ‘excuses’ for her addiction begin to remind him of the ones his mum used to say. Later, Iain confides his doubts in Stevie (Elinor Lawless), wondering if today has done more harm than good.

Nicole gets answers – but she wants more

Despite Flynn’s warning, Nicole hopes that some positive medical news for Cassie means that she has a chance of recovery.

When Vicky arrives, Nicole gets annoyed when she declares that she can’t cope after seeing Cassie’s condition. Nicole points out that this is the second time Vicky has abandoned Cassie.

After her outburst, Nicole is banned from visiting Cassie in ITU. Ngozi Okoye (Adesuwa Oni) helps Nicole realise that she was projecting suppressed feelings towards her own birth mum.

Nicole learns via her social services file that her mum gave her up. Despite finding some answers, Nicole wants more, and concludes that she wants to visit her biological mother.
