‘The Good Doctor’ Star Freddie Highmore on What’s Next for Him After the Series Finale

The actor is heading into a new phase of his career with an open mind.

Fans said goodbye to The Good Doctor after seven seasons on May 21, leaving everyone saddened to leave the world of San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Despite the show ending, star Freddie Highmore seems to have an open mind about what’s next for his acting career.

The Bates Motel alum spoke with Entertainment Tonight for an interview published on May 21, where he broke down his time portraying Dr. Shaun Murphy and his journey on the ABC drama. When asked about his next era of acting, Freddie joked that he needs to switch up his resume.7 Things to Know About Freddie Highmore

“Well, I guess I killed people [as Norman Bates], now I’m saving people,” he shared in a video posted on TikTok. “It’s funny, looking back to the beginning of The Good Doctor. I read the script three days after Bates Motel ended, and then was sitting down with [creator] David Shore and suddenly was doing the pilot … I think if that’s taught me anything, it’s that you never really know what’s next. That you just have to be open and excited for whatever that may be.”

So, does Freddie have an idea of what his next role will be? While he’s keeping mum about if he has another project lined up, he did note he’s ready for new opportunities to come his way.

“I don’t really know. I think that’s one of the things about this industry — in this world, it’s hard to say what will be next with any great degree of certainty,” he told ET when asked about his next project.

As fans eagerly await what’s next for Freddie, they can rest assured that the actor will take The Good Doctor with him wherever he goes. As he shared with the outlet, he’s become a different person since starting the show in 2017, and he’ll miss some of the innate qualities his character had throughout his TV tenure.

“Shaun has probably made me a better person,” he said. “I think he’s been a wonderfully optimistic sort of hopeful character to get to inhabit and to be excited to play every day. I think I will definitely miss that.”
