The final episode of Neighbours is right around the corner, but amid the chaos on Ramsay Street, there looks set to be a glimmer of hope in the last ever storyline.

For the second time in just a few years, Neighbours is preparing to wave goodbye as the beloved Australian soap has been cancelled by Amazon after the company initially saved it back in 2022.

With next week marking the final outing for the residents of Ramsay Street, the last storyline is an explosive one as the very setting of the soap is threatened with being demolished.

Controversial plans have been revealed that would involve demolishing the street in favour of a new freeway.

The residents are stunned and face a fierce fight to save Ramsay Street, but with the show set to end after 40 years, will the screen fade to black one last time with them all moving away?

It looks like there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon, with Neighbours icons Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne shedding some light on what fans can expect from the finale.

The duo have played Karl and Susan Kennedy respectively in the show across the last four decades.

Opening up about the show’s ending, Jackie told TV Week: “I think the fans will love the ending because it is about hope.

“Filming those scenes on the street, we were all reminded of the last time we were there. So it was kind of a double-barrelled emotional shotgun that day, because we were remembering the first time we farewelled the show.”

Speaking about the soap’s first shock cancellation, she continued: “The first breakup is always the hardest – that’s true heartbreak. This time we’ve had a bit of time to get our heads around it.

“But the loss is the same – we’re going to lose this incredible place where people can join the industry.”

The actor said they were both “very emotional” saying goodbye to the crew when filming wrapped over the summer.

“We’ve seen people grow up, get married, have children, get divorced, get remarried… We’ve had cast and crew who have passed away,” she said.

“We see each other through the best and the worst of life – and that’s a privilege that only happens when you get to play a character for this long.”

Alan added: “The fact that so much advertising is now spread over so many different platforms makes it very hard for free-to-air networks to survive and to make a product.

“What we think have been big changes over the last 40 years will be dwarfed by what AI is going to do to entertainment product.

“It’s something the industry and all the workers in it are going to have to be very vigilant about… Because it’s a runaway train that could run everybody over.”

Neighbours releases new episodes from Mondays to Thursdays for free on Prime Video in the UK and US. In Australia, the show airs from Mondays to Thursdays at 4pm on Channel 10, with a 6.30pm repeat screening on 10 Peach Comedy.
